Milkshake Poem from Before Sunrise

Daydream delusion
Limousine Eyelash
Oh, baby with your pretty face
Drop a tear in my wineglass
Look at those big eyes
See what you mean to me
Sweet cakes and milkshakes
I am a delusion angel
I am a fantasy parade
I want you to know what I think
Don’t want you to guess anymore
You have no idea where I came from
We have no idea where we’re going
Launched in life
Like branches in the river
Flowing downstream
Caught in the current
I’ll carry you. You’ll carry me
That’s how it could be
Don’t you know me?
Don’t you know me by now?

Childhood 2

Had read this poem as a part of curriculum in Std 2. It was one of my favourites. I remember reciting it would conjure up images of sweets, cakes and treats and I'd start craving for them!
Miss being a child.

Walter de la Mare

I know a little cupboard,
With a teeny tiny key,
And there's a jar of Lollypops
For me, me, me.

It has a little shelf, my dear,
As dark, as dark can be,
And there's a dish of Banbury Cakes
For me, me, me.

I have a small fat grandmamma,
With a very slippery knees,
And she's Keeper of the Cupboard,
With the key, key, key.

And when I'm very good, my dear,
As good as good can be,
There's Banbury Cakes, and Lollypops
For me, me, me.

Tagore I

Light, oh, where is the light? Kindle it with the burning fire of desire! It thunders and the wind rushes screaming through the void. The night is black as a black stone. Let not the hours pass by in the dark. Kindle the lamp of love with thy life.

-XXVII, Gitanjali.
By Rabindranath Tagore.

Rumi

Rumi was a Persian poet and a Sufi Mystic. Below is a collection of some of his works, translated into English.

QUATRAINS

[1]
Bring the pure wine of
love and freedom.
But sir, a tornado is coming.
More wine, we'll teach this storm
A thing or two about whirling.
[2]
The Lover is ever drunk with Love.
He is mad,
she is free.
He sings with delight,
she dances with ecstasy.
Caught by our own thoughts,
we worry about everything.
But once we get drunk on that Love
whatever will be, will be.

 [3]
When I am with you, we stay up all night,
When you're not here, I can't get to sleep.
Praise God for these two insomnias!
And the difference between them.

[4]
Let the lover be disgraceful, crazy,
absentminded. Someone sober
will worry about things going badly.
Let the lover be.

Mother

Mother is
Prithvi - all encompassing,
Jal - flowing love,
Agni - ever young, immortal,
Marut - exceptionally beautiful,
Aakash - the basis and essence of everything.

My childhood days were filled with the love and light that every child rightfully deserves from the time she even begins to be a child.
‘Childhood’, the word stirs in me a few feelings, brings to me some moments, a few stories, though mostly incomplete and infinite poetry, thoroughly forgotten, some fairies, some Gods, some magic and my mother.

'Semul' dreams

Clipped-winged,
tongue-curried.
Vibrant, glossy, proud!

                                 behind     cold     bars,
                                    in her sweet (curried-tongue) voice

When Harry Met Sally

Harry Burns: I love that you get cold when it's 71 degrees out. I love that it takes you an hour and a half to order a sandwich. I love that you get a little crinkle above your nose when you're looking at me like I'm nuts. I love that after I spend the day with you, I can still smell your perfume on my clothes. And I love that you are the last person I want to talk to before I go to sleep at night. And it's not because I'm lonely, and it's not because it's New Year's Eve. I came here tonight because when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible.

Happy Holi

There was something about the moon yesterday - she was a Holi moon. Saw her at about 8pm and she looked like she had been splashed in colors. She was a red-gold moon. (Wonder which of her friends she had been playing colors with - stars, fairies, elves and all?)
When I saw her about an hour later, she had returned to her pearly splendour - all dressed in silvers, after having had her bath. It was the moon's way of wishing us a Happy Holi, I felt.

Then on second thoughts, could she, like our earth have been in a blood bath, and then she, like us, the resilient members of the human race had washed off the blood and returned to her usual shining self?

Again and Again

-by Rainer Maria Rilke

Again and again, however we know the landscape of love
and the little churchyard there, with its sorrowing names,
and the frighteningly silent abyss into which others
fall : again and again the two of us walk out together
under the ancient trees, lie down again and again
among the flowers, face to face with the sky.

I See You

I watched Avatar and 3 idiots like everyone else in the fourth week of December 2009. Enjoyed watching both. But procrastination led me to write about them in the third week of January!

James Cameron's movies have always had the 'something else' quality to them. His last movie, Titanic is one of my favourite movies. (I can watch it innumerable times.)
And Cameron, it seems, holds 'I see you' close to his heart.

Rewind to 1999, first half of Titanic, the scene on the deck, where Rose thanks Jack for his 'discretion' the previous night. (The previous night Rose was hanging off the stern of the Titanic, contemplating suicide and Jack convinced her not do it. She had slipped but Jack had managed to pull her back and save her. When people asked about what happened, Rose made up a story, wanting to keep her suicide attempt a secret and Jack went along, not giving her away.)
Here Rose pulls his art book and starts flipping through his sketches and remarks, "This is exquisite work." and then goes on to say, "You have a gift Jack, you do. You see people."
Jack replies, "I see you."
Rose asks, "And...?"
Jack says, "You wouldn't have jumped."

To Avatar,
Avatar, in terms of visual quality and 3D effects has set different standards altogether. It has its share of I see you's too, I see.

The ruthless quest for 'unobtanium' (quite significantly called so) has a strong anti war message. Also the movie strongly endorses non violence, sapience and harmony with nature. The underlying ideology was consistent with the idea of our relationship with our ancestors. See http://shailysahay.blogspot.com/2009/09/our-traditions.html.
I found the visuals perfectly enthralling. The lush, blue and bioluminiscent Pandora flora reminded me of lovely underwater videos shown on the Discovery and National Geographic channels, so one could connect with the alien world. The movie's cinematography seamlessly weaves fantasy into sci-fi.
However, apart from the strong messages, beautific cinematography and special effects, I found Avatar's story simplistic. Enjoyable, yes, but it suffers from the stereotypical 'good guys - bad guys' storyline. Also the second half could have been crisper. The war sequences were quite long.

Admittedly, the 3D experience was amazingly in line with the cliche 'living the movie'! Even in its 2D form, Avatar was entertaining, futuristic and fantastic.

Mr. Cameron, I (hope to) see you (soon, again)!

New Year Wishes and Season's Greetings etc.

Wow, we glide into yet another year! Two thousand ten AD. Have been thinking hard, trying to make meaningful and noble new year resolutions etc...phew. Didn't work. So thought of taking a bird's eye view at the year that went by.

Economically India saw good industrial growth and a stabler stock market and real estate sector though inflation continued to rise. As a pleasant surprise, the GDP of Bihar was over 11%, only a tad behid that of Gujrat! Some companies began hiring too as Times Ascent lost it waif-like appearance. A positive trend was clearly established by December 2009.

Barack Obama's victory in the US President election marked a huge paradigm shift in world politics as the first African American entered the White House. In another historic political event, Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir was appointed as the new Prime Minister of Iceland, becoming the world's first openly lesbian head of government.
Indian politics saw general elections being held in April and May. Congress remained in power as Manmohan Singh retained the PM office and Sonia Gandhi continued to be the most powerful Indian woman.

Indian sports entered a new era as the Indian Cricket team bagged the first rank in Tests and the second rank in ODIs. Saina Nehwal was awarded the sports person on the year, which I feel was long overdue. She has been ranked 6 by the World Badminton Federation.

Entertainment and Indian film wise, 2009 looked like a drag. There were few good grossers like Love Aaj Kal, Wake Up Sid and Paa. However, it ended with a bang as 3 idiots set the screen on fire and broke all records! Internationally, there were some great movies like The Reader, Fast and Furious 4, Angels and Demons, 2012 and Inglorious Bastards among others. Fantasy films like Harry Potter 5, Twilight and New Moon made spectacular business. Also, the 3D trend was marked firmly throughout the year with animation films like Up, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and G-Force; but Avatar took world cinema into an altogether new dimension, quite literally.

Apart from this, we mourned the loss of Michael Jackson just before he was about to start a world tour, This is it. He passed away in June.
In December, we lost Dilip Chitre, Indian poet, artist and film maker. He was suffering from cancer.

Lots of other things happened, some memorable and significant, others not so much. Now let's wait and watch what 2010 has in store.

As I, with my sister and friends welcomed the New Year with a lavish buffet spread at the Coffee House, O Hotel, we hoped that 2010 brings good surprises and lots of cherishable moments for all of us.

Wish you and your loved ones a Happy 2010!
